Steps to run the free Norton Power Eraser Tool in Safe Mode

Step # 1 – Start the computer in Safe mode with Networking

  1.    Exit all programs.
  2.     Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
  3.     Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

  2. If the User Account Control window appears, click Yes or Continue.
  1.     In the System Configuration window, on the boot tab, check Safe boot and select Network.
  1. On Windows XP: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.
  1.     Click OK.
  2.     When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.
  1. The computer restarts in safe mode witH networking.

Step # 2 – Download and run Norton Power Eraser

  1. Download Norton Power Eraser.
  2. Do one of the following depending on your browser:
    1. For Internet Explorer: Click Run.
    2. For Firefox or Safari: On the top-right corner of the browser, click the Download option to view the downloaded files, and click the file that you downloaded.
    3. For Chrome: On the bottom-left corner, click the file that you downloaded.
  3. If the User Account Control window appears, click Yes or Continue.
  4. Read the license agreement, and click Accept.
  5. In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Scan for Risks icon.
  6. By default, Norton Power Eraser performs a Rootkit scan and requires a system restart. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart. If you do not want to include the Rootkit scan, go to Settings, and uncheck the option Include Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart).
  7. After the computer is restarted, the scan starts automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Step # 3 – Restart the computer in Normal mode

  1. Exit all programs.
  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
  3. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.
    1. msconfig
    2. If the User Account Control window appears, click Yes or Continue.
  4. In the System Configuration window, on the Boot tab, uncheck Safe boot.
    1. On Windows XP: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
  5. Click OK.
  6. When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.
